Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Organ and Tissue Donation Task Force, a non-partisan task force appointed to conduct an inquiry and make recommendations with respect to improving the rate of organ and tissue donation in Manitoba, has tabled their 26-page report in the Manitoba Legislature. The task force recommends increasing awareness towards organ and tissue donation by adding it to the high-school curriculum, launching promotional campaigns, and studying the feasibility of early detection surveillance.
The Taskforce was active from the fall of 2017 through to this spring, with public meetings held during this time. The report, penned by academic Charity Maritim, makes five main recommendations:
“Given my family’s personal experience with kidney transplants, chairing this Taskforce has been very rewarding and allowed me to see the issues from different perspectives,” said Reg Helwer, MLA for Brandon West and Chair of the Organ and Tissue Donation Task Force. “I am very encouraged by the progress that Manitoba has made with organ and tissue donations and these recommendations will further improve that.”
“We know that Manitobans are generous people,” added Andrew Swan, MLA for Minto. “We hope these recommendations will lead more Manitobans to consider making a gift of life.”
The issue of organ and tissue donation became the focus of national public attention in April following a bus crash in Saskatchewan in April that killed 15 players and staff of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. Organ donor signups surged in several provinces in response to the story of Logan Boulet, who donated his organs to six patients following the crash that took his own life.
More than 7,000 Manitobans registered online for organ donation in the week following the tragedy, with Transplant Manitoba surpassing its goal of 30,000 organ donors four days ahead of its April 30 target date.
Manitobans are encouraged to register their consent to donate at signupforlife.ca.
