PCs Call for Permanent Tax Break at the Pumps
Manitobans need long-term tax relief, not a short-term holiday: Khan
WINNIPEG — Manitoba Progressive Conservatives are calling on the NDP government to remove all provincial gas tax from all fuels and give Manitobans a permanent tax break at the pump in the new year, Obby Khan, PC Shadow Minister for Finance, announced today.
Provincial fuel taxes should be permanently removed from the sale of all fuels used to operate vehicles and other machinery in Manitoba, including marked gasoline and propane, said Khan. This will ensure fairness for all Manitobans and that tax savings are extended to farmers, industry, and outdoor recreationists.
“Manitobans deserve fuel tax fairness and permanent savings at the pump. But the NDP have rushed Bill 3 out the door with too many unanswered questions,” said Khan. “Simple, straightforward amendments can save this poorly-written legislation, and make it clear to Manitobans that all fuels will be permanently exempt from the fuel tax.”
Consumer inflation in Manitoba has spiked 13% over the last three years due to various national and international pressures, pushing up the cost of food, energy, and housing.
To address these challenges and bring prices down, PCs are also calling on the NDP government to stop charging and collecting the carbon tax on Manitoba Hydro heating bills. The carbon tax will cost families an extra $300 to heat their homes this winter, and an extra $700 by 2030.
“PCs have always stood for lower taxes and legislation that makes life more affordable for all Manitobans,” said Khan. “Today, the NDP have the opportunity to stand with us in support of real, permanent tax relief that makes life in Manitoba more affordable for the long haul.”
“Manitobans want action, not lip service, when it comes to tax fairness here at home and across Canada,” added Jeff Bereza, PC Shadow Minister for Agriculture. “The premier keeps flip-flopping on this issue. Today, we’re offering him a chance to redeem himself.”
