NDP Cuts Surgeries, Personal Care Homes Despite Largest-Ever Transfer from Justin Trudeau

NDP are putting their $3 billion worth of costly election promises over the needs of Manitobans: Khan

WINNIPEG — As Manitoba is set to receive a historic $842-million windfall from the federal government in 2024, Wab Kinew and the NDP plan to continue their reckless agenda of cuts to healthcare, personal care homes, childcare spaces, schools, and other important projects in the new year to pay for their $3 billion worth of election promises.

“This is the largest-ever federal transfer payment increase to Manitoba,” said Obby Khan, PC Shadow Minister for Finance. “The premier knew that this $842-million boost was coming but chose to hide it, and then misled Manitobans with inflated numbers and a false financial picture of the province.”

“The NDP are prioritizing their $3 billion worth of irresponsible election promises over the immediate needs of Manitobans today,” Khan added. “Families who rely on accessible healthcare, quality education, and proper facilities for their aging loved ones will be grappling with the consequences of these NDP cutbacks for years to come.”

During their 2023 campaign, the NDP promised to invest in healthcare and education. Since the October 3rd election, the NDP have cut—after initially claiming it was “paused”—the surgical and diagnostic task force without any interim plans to get Manitobans their surgeries. The NDP have also “paused” the construction of 9 new schools with over 600 childcare spaces, an international recruitment program for nurses, and three shovel-ready personal care homes, which Manitobans now see as being next on the NDP chopping block.

Manitobans will suffer the direct fallout of the NDP’s careless choices: longer wait times for surgeries, a housing shortage for seniors, fewer resources for childcare, and growing class sizes for children, Khan said.

“Manitobans deserve better. It’s obvious that the NDP is priming the pump to cut more programs, run large deficits, and raise taxes in the years ahead,” said Khan. “The NDP’s decision to cut these services in the face of historic federal support is an absolute betrayal of the trust placed in them by the very Manitobans they are meant to serve. Manitobans need assurance that their well-being will not continue to be sacrificed for cheap political gain.”
