Statement from the Leader of the Official Opposition Heather Stefanson on the Beginning of Hanukkah
At sunset tonight, Jewish communities across Manitoba and the world will light the first candles of the Hanukkah menorah, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness.
More than 2,000 years ago, Jewish warriors rose up against their oppressors who had outlawed Judaism in the holy land and destroyed the Temple of Jerusalem. The successful liberation of the Jewish people and rededication of the Second Temple is commemorated through Hanukkah.
History has witnessed Jewish resilience and perseverance time and time again. We have seen it in 200 BCE, and we see it now in 2023 CE. We know that the recent rise in antisemitism has made many Jewish households unsure if they can celebrate Hanukkah safely or proudly display their identity in public. There is also ongoing pain caused by the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The spirit of Hanukkah tells us that hope will prevail over adversity. We urge all Manitobans to stand up in the face of anti-Jewish hate to help our fellow Manitobans kindle the light and overcome darkness.
May the glow of the menorah burn bright and bring warmth to you this Hanukkah.
Chag sameach!
