Statement from PC Hydro Critic Grant Jackson on NDP Interference with Manitoba Hydro
WINNIPEG — Grant Jackson, PC Shadow Minister for Manitoba Hydro, released a statement today in response to the NDP government’s position on independent power producers in Manitoba:
“This week, Manitobans learned that the province may need more energy as early as 2029. Manitoba Hydro’s CEO outlined the company’s vision to meet the demand through strategic partnerships to generate more power—but Wab Kinew’s NDP pulled the plug because of their own ideology.
“Manitoba needs a strong, stable Manitoba Hydro to grow the provincial economy—but the NDP are more interested in racking up more debt for Hydro on the backs of ratepayers, while interfering with its ability to set its own rates and create its own strategic plans.
“Under Greg Selinger, the NDP ballooned Manitoba Hydro’s debt to $24 billion due to their mismanagement of Bipole III and Keeyask, which ratepayers are still paying for today. According to Hydro, 33 cents of every dollar Manitobans pay on their electricity bill goes to interest payments. That will only increase under Kinew’s plan.
“PCs are calling on the NDP to immediately stop its interference with Manitoba Hydro and allow it to operate independently so that Manitobans have a strong, sustainable Crown utility for years to come.”
