Statement from PC Education Critic Grant Jackson on Classroom Cellphone Ban

WINNIPEG — Spruce Woods MLA Grant Jackson, PC Critic for Education and Early Childhood Learning, issued the following statement today on the ban on cellphones in the classroom:

“After months of NDP delay and deflection, I’m glad to see the premier finally listened to parents and teachers, and stepped forward with a plan to eliminate cellphone distractions in the classroom. This will refocus students off their screens and onto their studies, and improve educational outcomes in our province.

“Wab Kinew’s two big announcements this week were banning cell phones, something we’ve been calling for weeks, and bringing back a PC plan to reintroduce ankle bracelets for criminals out on bail. While he is taking his policy direction from Progressive Conservatives, here’s a few things we’d like to add to the list for the NDP to get done:

  • Restore and fund the Manitoba Schools Project to build nine new schools in Winnipeg, Brandon, Neepawa, Ste. Anne, and West St. Paul
  • Implement $10 daycare on non-instructional school days starting in September
  • Restore the $4 million of funding cuts to summer Green Teams to extend youth employment through the fall and winter

“And while we have the ear of the NDP premier, we would like to remind him of his promises to lower ER wait times, bring down food prices, and control crime, all of which he has failed to deliver and is in fact making worse.”
