MDC Closure Marks New Beginning for Manitobans Living with Intellectual Disabilities

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — Today, the Manitoba Progressive Conservative Caucus acknowledges the formal closure of the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC), a significant milestone ending institutional care and providing compassionate, community-based living across the province for people with intellectual disabilities.

“Today marks the end of a difficult chapter in Manitoba’s history and the start of a brighter future for many Manitobans,” said Wayne Ewasko, Leader of the Official Opposition. “Manitobans living with intellectual disabilities are our family members, our neighbours, our friends, our fellow students, and our colleagues. They deserve to live with dignity, respect, and the necessary supports alongside their families and in their communities.”

A reception marking the closure of the MDC was held at the Legislature on Thursday. The closure fulfills the commitment made by the previous PC government in 2021 to transition MDC residents out of institutional care and into community settings.

In June 2023, then-Premier Heather Stefanson issued a formal apology in the Legislature to former residents for the abuse and neglect many suffered during their time at the institution.

Portage la Prairie MLA Jeff Bereza said the MDC site remains a valuable resource for the community. Repurposing the grounds and buildings could help address the many needs of the community and surrounding region, such as education, healthcare, and housing, he said.

“The closure of the MDC offers an opportunity to reimagine this facility and its role in serving our community,” said Bereza. “We have a valuable piece of property here, not just for Portage la Prairie, but for all of Manitoba. We have the opportunity, the space, and solutions right in front of us. Now, we just need the will and commitment from the NDP government to make it happen.”
