PCs Call for End to Job-Destroying Payroll Tax

WINNIPEG — Today, the Manitoba PC Caucus brought forward a resolution in the Legislature urging the NDP government to phase out and permanently eliminate the payroll tax, which is driving away businesses, discouraging investment, and making it harder for Manitobans to find good jobs.

“Manitoba has the second-highest payroll tax in Canada, and under the NDP, unemployment has jumped from 4% to over 6%,” said Midland MLA Lauren Stone, PC Critic for Finance. “Instead of helping businesses and workers, the NDP are making Manitoba less competitive.”

The previous PC government began phasing out the payroll tax, providing relief to small and medium-sized businesses. The NDP halted that progress and are now offering only a temporary deferral while businesses struggle with rising costs and U.S. tariffs.

Progressive Conservatives are calling for a clear timeline to phase out the payroll tax, real long-term relief for businesses struggling under American and Chinese tariffs, and for the NDP to end their tax-and-spend approach.

“The NDP’s mismanagement of our economy is costing Manitobans jobs and opportunities,” said Stone. “What we need right now is action to strengthen our economy, not more taxes that drive businesses and jobs away.”
