NDP Impose Unprecedented Tax Hike on Victoria Beach Cottagers
VICTORIA BEACH — The Manitoba PCs are condemning Wab Kinew and his NDP government for imposing an unprecedented increase in school taxes on cottage owners in Victoria Beach.
“Premier Kinew’s punishing tax increase on cottage owners is outrageous and completely unacceptable,” said Wayne Ewasko, Leader of the Official Opposition. “This massive hike targets hardworking Manitobans who have built and maintained family cottages for generations, and pushes the dream of cottage ownership out of reach for many Manitobans.”
Cottagers in Victoria Beach will see their school tax bills skyrocket from $641 last year to $1,621 this year, according to media reports. This is the direct result of the NDP eliminating the PCs’ universal 50% school tax rebate and replacing it with a limited tax credit that applies only to primary residences—leaving cottagers, small businesses, and others stuck paying more.
The NDP plan to collect $182 million more in education property taxes in Budget 2025 through tax increases and the elimination of the school tax rebate.
As families and businesses face double-digit increases on education property taxes across the province, the Manitoba PC Caucus stands with property owners and municipalities demanding immediate action to reverse these harmful tax hikes and restore fairness for Manitoba taxpayers.
“The NDP’s failure to fund schools and fix Manitoba’s outdated education funding system is driving massive school tax hikes across the province,” said Midland MLA Lauren Stone, PC Critic for Finance. “Manitobans shouldn’t be taxed out of their homes because of the NDP’s reckless decisions. The government needs to reverse these damaging tax hikes immediately and stop punishing working families.”
