Manitoba Legislature Unanimously Passes PC Bill to Commemorate Victims of Impaired Driving

WINNIPEG — Members of the Manitoba Legislature have unanimously passed a PC private member’s bill to remember Manitobans lost to impaired driving.

Bill 232, The Victims of Impaired Drivers Commemoration Day Act, was introduced by Brandon West MLA Wayne Balcaen, PC Critic for Justice, in remembrance of Jordyn Reimer and all victims of impaired driving.

“I welcome the all-party support for this private member’s bill. It will bring a measure of comfort to the Reimer family, who have suffered greatly during this process,” said Balcaen. “The family has been at the Manitoba Legislative Building for each step of the legislative process, and I applaud and welcome their unwavering courage and support.”

The Reimer family have been relentless advocates on the deadly consequences of impaired driving since the tragic death of their daughter, Jordyn, who was killed by an impaired driver on May 1, 2022.

“This bill is in remembrance of Jordyn Reimer. That’s why we’re calling for May 1 to be Victims of Impaired Drivers Commemoration Day, for Jordyn and the many, many other victims of impaired driving,” said Balcaen. “The Reimer family had 100 victim impact statements read in court. The lives that are impacted when there is a death in the community go far beyond the victims and their immediate families.”

There is no other jurisdiction in Canada with a day dedicated to the victims of impaired driving. Bill 232 not only establishes a day to recognize the victims, families, and communities impacted by impaired driving, but also provides an opportunity to educate Manitobans on the devastating impact of this deadly crime.
