Portage la Prairie Needs MRIs

Why this petition matters

Portage la Prairie MLA Jeff Bereza has been advocating at the Manitoba Legislature over the past few months to bring an MRI machine at the new Portage Regional Health Centre.

Currently, patients from Portage who need MRIs must go to other regional health centres in Morden-Winkler, Dauphin, Brandon, and Winnipeg. However, many patients, often seniors, lack transportation to reach these appointments hours away.

Portage’s central location in Manitoba means that bringing an MRI machine to PRHC can also help ease wait times across the province—where there are nearly 24,000 people currently waiting for an MRI scan, with an average wait time of 6-8 months.

With PRHC set to feature cultural spaces and services, an MRI at this new hospital will also help reduce cultural barriers to diagnostic testing for the several First Nations surrounding Portage la Prairie.

Over 30 doctors from Portage Clinic have sent a letter to the Minister of Health imploring the Minister to reconsider omitting an MRI from the Portage Regional Health Centre. The Minister has so far refused.

An MRI machine located at PRHC will bring care closer to home, reduce transportation costs for patients, and ease the burden on other health facilities.

SIGN THE PETITION to call on the Manitoba government to support the investment and placement of an MRI machine in the new Portage Regional Health Centre.
