It’s Time to Stop Changing the Clocks
WINNIPEG — Springfield-Ritchot MLA Ron Schuler introduced amendments to the Official Time Amendment Act this week to end the outdated and disruptive practice of seasonal time changes.
If passed, Manitoba will move to permanent daylight time effective March 8, 2026.
“Manitobans are tired of losing an hour of sleep and gaining nothing in return,” said Schuler. “In fact, research clearly shows that time changes increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, workplace accidents, and lost productivity. It’s time to stop changing the clocks and leave this outdated practice in the past.”
Under current legislation, Manitoba’s move depends on neighbouring jurisdictions making the same change. Schuler’s amendments would remove that barrier, allowing Manitoba to lead instead of waiting for others to act.
Provinces like Saskatchewan and other regions of Canada, including the Yukon and parts of British Columbia, do not change their clocks, Schuler noted.
The proposed amendments will be debated in the coming weeks.
