PCs Congratulate Alamos Gold on Lynn Lake Gold Mine Groundbreaking
NDP cuts mining and geoscience spending by 4.5% in Budget 2025
WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Progressive Conservative Caucus congratulated Alamos Gold today on breaking ground at its Lynn Lake gold mine, and highlighted the important role successive PC governments played in securing this significant economic development for the province.
“Today’s milestone is the result of years of hard work, prudent leadership, and strong policies from Progressive Conservative governments,” said Wayne Ewasko, Leader of the Official Opposition. “We backed Alamos Gold’s feasibility studies, improved roads and airports, secured economic benefit agreements with local First Nations, and streamlined permitting to clear the way for this project’s approval in 2023.”
Manitoba’s significant rise in global mining rankings in recent years has attracted record investments in exploration and development, and contributed to economic growth and job creation throughout the province.
“Our pro-growth policies improved Manitoba’s ranking to third in Canada and sixth worldwide for mining investment in 2023,” said Ewasko. “These policies brought Manitoba’s first potash mine near Russell into production in 2023 and approved the innovative Canadian Premium Sand project with Hollow Water First Nation near Selkirk.”
Despite PCs’ work, the NDP government issued a news release today falsely claiming that the Alamos mine is “the first mine to open in Manitoba in over 15 years.”
Ewasko expressed further concern about the recent actions taken by Wab Kinew’s NDP government, noting Natural Resources Canada now ranks Manitoba second last in the country for planned energy, mining, and forestry investments over the next decade, with 14 major projects cancelled or suspended in 2024.
“The NDP’s 2025 budget cuts funding to the Minerals, Petroleum, and Geoscience branch by 4.5%, and slashes support for geological surveying and business development,” said Ewasko. “Their proposed Bill 11 adds new red tape that could threaten approved projects and damage Manitoba’s reputation with investors.”
“The NDP have openly supported and signed on to the LEAP Manifesto, clearly showing Manitobans their willingness to keep our natural resources in the ground undeveloped,” added Ewasko. “Manitobans need a government committed to creating jobs, supporting industry, and growing the economy—not one standing in the way.”
