NDP Vote Down Motion to Grow Manitoba’s Economy
WINNIPEG — Wab Kinew and his NDP revealed their true colours in the Legislature today when they voted down PCs’ motion to grow Manitoba’s faltering economy. The motion from the Official Opposition called on the NDP to sign on to a Memorandum of Understanding with fellow premiers to create an energy and critical minerals corridor across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
“Wab Kinew and his NDP have no idea how to grow the economy and bring good paying jobs and investment to our province,” said Obby Khan, Leader of the Official Opposition. “Manitoba’s economy has been in a downward spiral for the last two years thanks to the NDP piling on $4 billion in debt while the unemployment rate keeps rising.”
Recent data from Statistics Canada shows that Manitoba has the slowest GDP growth rate among Canadian provinces and Nunavut at just 1.1%. An annual survey of mining companies showed investor confidence in Manitoba’s mining sector has also plummeted, according to the Fraser Institute. Manitoba’s mining investment attractiveness was ranked 6th in the world in 2023, but dropped to 26th place this year.
“Wab Kinew and his NDP are driving businesses out of Manitoba with their anti-business, pro-union policies,” said Khan. “We’ve seen a consistent theme from Kinew when it comes to tariffs from Donald Trump and tariffs from China on our canola. His only response is asking Ottawa for a bail out. Where’s the made-in-Manitoba plan for the economy?”
Kinew had the opportunity to sign on to the Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario MOU this summer. He claimed that he passed over the agreement because he did not have sign-off from Manitoba’s First Nations, despite the MOU having a clearly defined consultation process with Indigenous peoples.
“Today, Premier Kinew had the opportunity to put Manitoba’s economy first,” said Khan. “He could have supported the Opposition motion, joined our fellow Prairie provinces and Ontario and grown Manitoba’s economy. Instead, the Kinew NDP have once again shown that they have no plan for economic growth, no plan for Manitoba’s future prosperity, and no plan to provide good paying jobs to Manitobans.”
