Manitoba’s Cost-of-Living Crisis Deepens as Inflation Tops the Provinces
WINNIPEG — Manitoba continues to face some of the worst affordability pressures in the country according to Statistics Canada’s latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, with the province tying for the highest inflation rate among all provinces and leading the nation in several key household cost categories.
Manitoba posted an overall inflation rate of 3%, tied for the highest in Canada. There are also stark increases in everyday expenses that are putting significant strain on Manitoba families.
Food prices remain a major driver of rising costs. Manitoba recorded the highest food inflation rate in the country at 4.9%, making groceries increasingly unaffordable for many Manitoba families. Within this category, fresh and frozen meat prices jumped a shocking 12.6% compared to last year, a sharp increase that affects staple meals and household budgets across the province.
Dining out has also become more expensive than anywhere else in Canada. Manitoba saw the highest inflation rate for food purchased from restaurants at 5.2%, further squeezing Manitoba families who rely on prepared food due to time, work, or caregiving demands.
Housing-related costs present another significant challenge. Manitoba experienced the highest increase in owned accommodation costs at 5.3%, reflecting rising expenses associated with homeownership, including maintenance, utilities, and financing pressures.
Even more striking is the burden of property taxes. Manitoba recorded the highest property tax increase in the country at 19.5%, a steep rise that directly impacts homeowners and renters alike, as increased costs are often passed along through higher rents.
“These numbers paint a clear picture: affordability in Manitoba is worsening across the board,” said Midland MLA Lauren Stone, PC Critic for Finance. “From groceries and restaurant meals to housing and property taxes, Manitobans are paying more for the basics than Canadians in any other province.”
With inflation pressures touching nearly every aspect of daily life, the latest CPI figures underscore the growing financial stress facing Manitoba families and the urgency of addressing cost-of-living challenges in the province.
