PCs Celebrate Manitoba Curling Week

Manitoba’s world-leading reputation in curling is something all Manitobans should be proud of: Ewasko

WINNIPEG — Progressive Conservatives are proud to join Manitobans this week to celebrate the sixth annual Manitoba Curling Week and 134th Manitoba Open Bonspiel, Wayne Ewasko, MLA for Lac du Bonnet, announced today.

Manitoba Curling Week takes place every third week of January, with its inaugural celebration held in 2019 following the passing of a private member’s resolution introduced by Ewasko, himself an accomplished competitive curler and former coach of championship high school teams.

“The social, cultural, and physical benefits of curling reach all corners of our province, which is a global leader in the sport,” said Ewasko. “I brought the resolution forward because, as a life-long curler, I had a responsibility to ensure that the Legislature recognizes just how important curling is to our communities and provincial heritage.”

Manitoba Curling Week culminates in the eagerly anticipated Manitoba Open, the world’s largest bonspiel, from January 18 to 22, which features 256 teams this year.

The finals of 15 events will be hosted at three different curling clubs, including Deer Lodge, Pembina, and St. Vital on Monday, January 22. It was the St. Vital club that first brought the idea to designate Manitoba Curling Week to the attention of PC Caucus members in 2018.

“CurlManitoba has done various initiatives around Curling Week in Manitoba, including last year, when we held a friendly competition for clubs to thank a volunteer,” said Craig Baker, Executive Director of CurlManitoba. “The Manitoba Open is a great event that sees many curlers enjoy the friendly competitive structure as well as socializing in some of Winnipeg and Manitoba’s historic clubs.”

Manitoba PCs encourage all Manitobans to visit their local curling clubs this week.

“Manitoba is home to some of the best curlers in the world,” said Konrad Narth, PC Shadow Minister for Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism. “There’s no denying the sport’s long history and influence in Manitoba. Even our own PC Caucus has had several amazing curlers as MLAs over the years.”
