New PC-Funded Epilepsy Unit Opens to Improve Access for Manitoba Patients

WINNIPEG — A new expanded epilepsy monitoring unit made possible thanks to investments by the previous PC government is helping Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg to better serve Manitobans living with epilepsy.

In 2021, following the creation of a pediatric epilepsy surgery program in 2018, PCs announced $4 million towards expanding HSC Winnipeg’s adult Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) to improve access to state-of-the-art diagnostic services for Manitobans living with, or suspected of having, seizure disorders.

In 2022, PCs announced the establishment of a comprehensive epilepsy program in Manitoba to provide monitoring and life-changing surgical intervention, supported by an investment of more than $2.5 million in annual operating funding.

PCs also applaud the HSC Foundation for developing a donor-funded step-down unit for recovery, opened adjacent to the EMU in December 2023, to further increase capacity and benefit hundreds of Manitobans every year with specialized monitoring and care.

March is National Epilepsy Awareness Month and March 26 is “Purple Day” to raise public awareness of the condition. Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent seizures. There are approximately 23,000 Manitobans who live with epilepsy and/or seizure disorders.

PCs encourage all Manitobans to learn more about epilepsy: https://manitobaepilepsy.org/
