‘Game Changer’: New CT Scanner Expands Healthcare Across Swan Valley with PC Support

SWAN RIVER — Residents across the Swan Valley region can now access diagnostic services closer to home thanks to the opening of a much-awaited CT scanner funded by Progressive Conservatives, Swan River MLA Rick Wowchuk shared today.

In 2022, the previous PC government announced an investment of more than $2 million towards the new CT scanner at Swan Valley Health Centre (SVHC) and approximately $400,000 per year in operating costs, in addition to the $1 million raised by the Town of Swan River and surrounding communities.

“The job got done thanks to all of the municipalities, residents, and everyone who was so instrumental in making this happen,” said Wowchuk. “Your relentless determination made this a reality.”

“I also want to thank the healthcare workers who rose to the occasion beyond their skill sets by taking on training to help operate the new equipment. This project has been a team effort through and through.”

The scanner arrived at SVHC in March of this year, scanning its first patient in May and becoming fully operational as of June 17, with an open house held this past Wednesday. The project was completed on schedule as projected by PCs in 2023.

Patients previously would have to travel to Dauphin, Brandon, or Winnipeg to obtain CT scans. Up to 2,200 scans are now expected to be performed in Swan River per year, and over 400 total scans have already been completed as of late July.

“To think that it takes about 10 minutes and you’re in and out,” said Wowchuk. “This is a game changer for healthcare services in the Valley. It is going to save lives.”
