PCs Call for Immediate Support, Answers for Ag Producers After Unprecedented Rainfall

WOODLANDS — Manitoba Progressive Conservatives are urging Premier Wab Kinew and his NDP government to provide immediate clarity and support for agricultural producers facing devastating losses after last week’s unprecedented rainfall.
Lakeside MLA Trevor King visited impacted areas in the Rural Municipalities of Rosser, Woodlands, and Rockwood alongside two local producers, who showed the extent of the damage that some farm families are now facing, including flooded fields, washed out access, and serious crop losses.
“Some producers are facing such a level of devastation that crop insurance alone will not make them financially whole,” said King, who is the PC Critic for Municipal and Northern Relations. “These are farm families who need answers now, not months or years from now.”
Last week’s rainfall saturated fields, overwhelmed drainage systems, and left many producers uncertain about whether they will be able to recover their losses.
“Agriculture contributes between 8-10% of Manitoba’s GDP and employs around 50,000 people,” said King. “When producers are hit this hard, the impact is felt well beyond the farm gate. The provincial government needs to respond with the urgency that this sector deserves.”
Under Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) rules, losses are generally not covered if insurance was available, even when a producer was uninsured or underinsured. King said that the government must clearly explain what support will be available for producers who fall through that gap.
“The premier has said that those requirements are ‘boilerplate’ and that everybody will be taken care of,” said King. “But Manitobans need to know what that actually means, how the premier plans to modify or work around a federal program, and whether producers will receive real support beyond crop insurance.”
Producers cannot afford to wait through a long and uncertain DFA process while facing immediate financial pressure from damaged land, lost production, and infrastructure impacts, King added.
“DFA can take years to resolve, but these producers need support and answers now,” said King. “The Kinew government must explain what help is available, who will qualify, when support will arrive, and how it will ensure that producers are not left financially devastated by this disaster.”
King said that Manitoba’s Official Opposition will continue pressing the government to provide clear timelines, clear eligibility rules, and immediate assistance for affected producers, municipalities, and rural residents.
